“A phone call was all it took get some piece of mind back in our control after having our world turned upside down.”
“Our story began September 1st, 2021. A diagnosis no one prepared you for or a map for the upcoming road ahead. Our youngest son Kai was 16 months old when he was diagnosed with a stage 4 malignant germ cell tumour in his groin that had metastasized to his lymph nodes and lungs. With the unknown ahead of us our journey began.
We had been referred to Ronald McDonald house by our Pediatric oncologist who had the social worker set everything up for us. A phone call was all it took get some piece of mind back in our control after having our world turned upside down. Being overwhelmed and tired from some sleepless nights in the hospital you could feel the calm and homelike atmosphere RMH provides. It didn’t take long to get acquainted with the house and the volunteers who tirelessly work to make it a home away from home.
Throughout our 98 plus days we have spent in the house it was a place of rest, a place to eat, a place to form friendships, a place to vent, it was everything we needed at our fingertips when we were navigating the darkest hours of our lives. The staff and house volunteers always had a smile and a minute or as long as needed for a talk. You never had to be alone in your journey while at the RMH-SK.
To this day we have trips to the house for appointments early in the mornings. It’s always a grateful and thankful moment walking through the doors knowing that we have a safe, clean, open and caring place to rest our heads when we have to revisit the dark days. I feel we have made friends for life being at RMH.”
