“…it was so much more than expected.”
“Our first experience with RMHC-SK occurred when Carter was admitted to Royal University Hospital Pediatrics at 4 weeks old. We were unsure of how long he would be admitted and where we were going to stay. One of the nurses mentioned Ronald McDonald House. Before coming to the house, I remember feeling worried, lost and unsure.
When we first got to the house, it was so much more than expected. We were greeted by smiles, helpful hands and understanding. Our family appreciated the programming that was offered to us, especially some meals that we did not have to worry about while navigating this journey.
Not having to worry about being financially stressed, while already being stressed about your child was a godsend.
I met other parents who were experiencing similar feelings as myself. A fellow mom and I bonded over our experience of doctors, questions and medical talk. We still keep in touch. Carter was eventually discharged from the hospital. There we were with this baby, attached to an oxygen tank with more questions than answers. We were able to stay at the house one more night and the staff supported us knowing that we were not quite ready to leave. Since that first stay, we have been back there a handful of times for appointments, scopes and surgery. We don’t know what the future holds and I’m sure we will be there again, but after the positivity, love and care we receive, we are ok with that.”
