The Rafuse Family

“To have a place of comfort so close to the hospital and to be able to have a quick breather, do laundry, have a shower and grab a quick snack, was what helped fuel our strength to get us through these days.”

“Our daughter Jade was born with a congenital tethered spinal cord. Over the course of the past 3 years, she has had 2 major spinal surgeries (one at age 1.5 years and the 2nd at 2.5 years). Both surgeries have required her to be intubated in the pediatric intensive care unit postoperatively. Following her second surgery, at age 2.5 years, she faced several unexpected complications; a cardiac arrest and a large spinal bleed. This led to a longer-than-expected hospital stay, and it was during these times that we were introduced to the Ronald McDonald House. It provided a supportive place for us to stay, that ultimately helped us get our family through one of the most difficult times of our lives.

The staff not only checked in on us on a regular basis but went up and above to deliver us home-cooked meals, which were provided by volunteers during our stay in PICU when I found it extremely difficult to leave Jade’s bedside.

To have a place of comfort so close to the hospital and to be able to have a quick breather, do laundry, have a shower and grab a quick snack, was what helped fuel our strength to get us through these days. I remember sitting on the outdoor front steps connecting with a volunteer and the positive impact that she made on my day.

I will never forget all the volunteers and staff at RMH and all the special connections we made during the challenging times; they have left a forever-lasting impression on our family and we are so grateful! Anyone who has been inside knows it is a very special place with very special people.” ♡
