As a member of the Guest Experience Volunteer (GEV) Team you play a significant role in ensuring all guests and visitors to RMHC-SK are greeted and welcomed with exceptional hospitality into the House environment. In addition, you help create a friendly and comfortable environment by assisting the daily operations of the House, and supporting families as needed. The GEV is under the direction of the Guest Experience Receptionist and Family Service Coordinator. We value teamwork and collaboration and grateful you are part of the Ronald McDonald House SK Team! You will act as an ambassador of RMHC-SK and our values both in the House and in the community.
Qualifications:
- Able to deal with the public, staff & other volunteers in a supportive, friendly and hospitable manner
- Enthusiastic and willing to take initiative
- Able to be an understanding and compassionate listener but not a counselor or problem solver
- Able to deal with a variety of people and situations in a sensitive manner without imposing views or passing judgments
- Understand and practice confidentiality
- Be dependable, arriving on time as scheduled
- Ability to work independently and be self-directed
- Able to perform light housekeeping and light lifting
- Keep a neat and clean appearance
- Able to pass a background check
- Provide two personal reference letters
Responsibilities:
- Act as an agent of exceptional hospitality
- Check in at the Volunteer room at the beginning of your shift to learn about any updates important to your role
- Adhere to all RMHC-SK Protocols, Procedures and Policies
- Not mandatory, but appreciated: attempt to fill any shift you must cancel by contacting Volunteers from the casual list provided
Family, Guest and Visitor Support
- Greet guests and visitors at the front door and make them feel welcome
- Answer the door as per security protocol
- Follow visitor sign in procedures
- Accept donations that are delivered to the House (ie: monetary, Wish List items, quilts, etc.)
- Write welcome messages on the guest room chalk boards for new families
- Show families to their rooms upon arrival.
- Provide tours to families, guests and visitors when required
- Register children for our Kids Care Program
- Accompany families to the Quilt Room and Fun Forest upon check out
- Provide general assistance, service and support activities to all guests
Administrative Support
- Answer the phone and direct calls accordingly
- Record donations accurately
- Accept and sign for deliveries
- Register Volunteer/Guest parking
- Office administrative work and special projects as required
- Carry a portable phone for ease of communication
Facility Support
- Assist in maintaining organized public and storage spaces (ie: quilt room, multi-purpose room, storage areas, etc.
- Assist in keeping the House secure by observation and compliance with safety protocol
- Do ‘walk-about’ of all 4 floors of the House taking note of things that need attention
- Light housekeeping which may include but not limited to: recycling newspapers/empty garbage cans/empty or fill dishwasher/wipe down counters and sinks/replenish coffee and baking supplies and keep coffee station clean/disinfect surfaces/tidy all common areas
- Other duties as required
Training and Support
- General orientation and training will be provided
- Role specific training will be provided
- Continuing training and support will be offered to all volunteers.
Time Commitment:
- 1 shift per week for a commitment of 8 months to a year
- Or a bi-weekly shift when applicable
- Shift times vary from 2 – 4 hours depending on opportunity
Parking:
We recognize that parking is a challenge in our community. We would recommend, if possible, that you walk, bike, bus, or get dropped off. If you must drive, we request the following:
- For visits to the House 2 hours or less, please park on University Drive west of Clarence Ave.
- For visits two hours or longer, park in the ONE volunteer parking space in the lot (if open). Alternatively, you can park in a family parking space in the lot if there is one available. If you are parking in the lot, you MUST register with the front desk to ensure we are able to contact you while on your volunteer shift in case of needing to move your vehicle for emergency. Unregistered vehicles may be towed.
