As the Home for Dinner Host, you play a significant role in creating warm and comfortable environment for our families. You also act as the ‘face’ and ambassador of the House as you work closely with corporate and community groups who wish to provide meals for our guests. The Home for Dinner Host works under the direction of the Food Program Coordinator and Food Program Assistant. Qualifications:
- Able to deal with the public, staff, families, & other volunteers in a supportive, friendly and hospitable manner
- Enthusiastic and willing to take initiative
- Possess qualities of friendliness, dependability, tact and flexibility
- Willingness to take a Food Safe Course (provided through Ronald McDonald House)
- Able to pass a background check
Responsibilities
- Adhere to all RMHC-SK Protocols Procedures & Policies
- Check in at the Volunteer Room at the beginning of shift to check for important updates and information.
- Always wear a name tag
- Check in with Food Programs Coordinator and Food Programs Assistant on site for specific updates and direction for shift.
- Act as the liaison between corporate and community groups who are participating in the Home for Dinner program.
- Become familiar with the kitchen with respect to kitchen policies, procedures and processes.
- Follow all food safe course guidelines
- One Home for Dinner Host is required to be on-site during the Home for Dinner event to greet the group, help them get settled, and assist where necessary. This may include setting out dinnerware or assisting with leftover food storage.
- Work collaboratively with the Food Program Coordinator to develop a sustainable Home for Dinner schedule.
- Seek out HFD Day Use Guests and extend a personal welcome and offer to answer any questions they may have about the House (House Support Volunteer will be on hand to provide Day Use Guests a tour following supper).
- Offer a verbal thank you to the group who has prepared dinner.
- Properly store and label (and date) all remaining leftovers and place in the community pantry.
- Record any pertinent feedback from groups in the HFD portion of the Family Program Binder.
Training and Support
- General orientation and training will be provided
- Role specific training will be provided
- Continuing training and support will be offered to all volunteers.
Time Commitment:
- 1 shift per week for a commitment of 8 months to a year
- Or a bi-weekly shift when applicable
- Shift times vary from 2 – 4 hours depending on opportunity
Parking:
We recognize that parking is a challenge in our community. We would recommend, if possible, that you walk, bike, bus, or get dropped off. If you must drive, we request the following:
- For visits to the House 2 hours or less, please park on University Drive west of Clarence Ave.
For visits two hours or longer, park in the ONE volunteer parking space in the lot (if open). Alternatively, you can park in a family parking space in the lot if there is one available. If you are parking in the lot, you MUST register with the front desk to ensure we are able to contact you while on your volunteer shift in case of needing to move your vehicle for emergency. Unregistered vehicles may be towed.
