Preventative Maintenance Volunteer

As a member of the Preventative Maintenance Team, you play a significant role in creating a comfortable and welcoming environment for our families. Under the direction of the Maintenance & Facility Coordinator you will assist with the care and maintenance of important appliances and equipment that are important to making the families safe and comfortable. Responsibilities:

  • Be willing to complete maintenance tasks as directed by the Facility Coordinator.
  • Tasks would include:
    • Check HP filters in laundry rooms and common areas
    • Clean lint traps in dryers
    • Clean ice maker
    • Check and Clean BBQ
    • Ensure outdoor garbage and cigarette butt holders are emptied
    • Floor cleaner maintenance
    • De-lime dishwashers
    • Clean exhaust hoods
    • Deep clean washers and dryers
    • Other duties as they come up
  • Communicate your availability to the Facility Coordinator and commit to a regular schedule as well possible monthly projects/items.
  • Communicate House or work issues with Facility Coordinator and complete check list.
  • Clean up after each work session.
  • Be welcoming and friendly to all guests of Ronald McDonald House
  • Adhere to all RMHC-SK Procedures, Protocols and Policies

Necessary Skills: 

  • Willingness to get your hands dirty!
  • Dependable – must be able to commit to a regular schedule.
  • Independent – we will train and resource you, but most of your work will happen independently of Staff.
  • Physically capable – some of the work can be physically demanding with some jobs requiring 4 hands.
  • Skilled in work safe practices.
  • A friendly and enthusiastic demeanor!

Training and Support 

  • General orientation and training will be provided 
  • Role specific training will be provided
  • Continuing training and support will be offered to all volunteers.

Time Commitment:

  • 1 shift per week for a commitment of 8 months to a year
  • 2-3 hours per shift plus occasional projects

Parking: 

We recognize that parking is a challenge in our community. We would recommend, if possible, that you walk, bike, bus, or get dropped off. If you must drive, we request the following:

  • For visits to the House 2 hours or less, please park on University Drive west of Clarence Ave.

For visits two hours or longer, park in the ONE volunteer parking space in the lot (if open). Alternatively, you can park in a family parking space in the lot if there is one available. If you are parking in the lot, you MUST register with the front desk to ensure we are able to contact you while on your volunteer shift in case of needing to move your vehicle for emergency. Unregistered vehicles may be towed.
